The Three Phases of The South Beach Diet

And in contrast to what most of the people often think of the diet, the South Beach diet, is neither a low-carb diet nor a low-fat diet. 5 Simple Ways To Help Your Family Lose Weight

By Bev Grey If your family is overweight and at risk for obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, etc., you may be able to make a big difference in their health with a few simple changes: 1. Turn off the TV. Many families turn on the TV as soon as they get up in the morning, and dont turn it off until everyone goes to bed. Why live your lives through TV characters? Except for homework, limit your total screen time (TV, computer and video games) to no more than 2 hours a day, and use the remaining time to be active. You dont necessarily have to play sports or work out, but take a walk, rake leaves, play with the dog, or just stay inside and clean house, put on some music and dance, have a pillow fight, etc. The main thing is to keep moving instead of being couch potatoes. 2. Make water your familys beverage of choice. Too much juice, too many soft drinks, or too much beer can make everyone fat. You dont have to ban all other beverages from your life, just save them for outside the home on special occasions--and even then, drink regular size instead of super-size. Make sure juice is 100% natural, and limit it to one 6-ounce glass a day. 3. Limit fast food or pizza delivery to once a week. I know you are tired after working all day or running the kids around to all their activities, but fast food is a fast track to obesity. Cheeseburgers, French fries, and giant drinks are loaded with calories and fat. Have your own fast food with pre-washed, bagged salad greens, and pre-cut fruit and veggies. Frozen crock pot dinners can be started in the morning; prepared meat loaves or other prepared meat dishes can be cooked quickly in the microwave. Frozen vegetables only take a few minutes to cook. Sit down at the table to eat, and get to know each other. 4. Make sure everyone gets enough sleep. Studies have shown definite connections between too little sleep and obesity. Children need at least 9-11 hours; adults usually need 7-8 hours. When you dont get enough sleep, you are often too tired to exercise, too groggy to concentrate at work or school, and less apt to eat breakfast. Which brings me to point #5: 5. Never skip breakfast! Forget about doughnuts, toaster pastries, and pre-sweetened cereals. Instead, have 1-minute oatmeal or cold cereal that is not pre-sweetened, along with a piece of fruit or some berries. Prepare hard boiled eggs while you clean up after dinner, and refrigerate for a quick breakfast. Natural peanut butter on whole wheat toast or bread is quick and nutritious. Grab a glass of fat-free milk and go! You dont even have to diet! Just make the above changes, and you will soon see a big difference in the health and weight of your whole family! Fad Diets - Popular Ways to Drop Weight Fast

By Danna Schneider Fad diets are an American tradition. What was all the rage a few months ago is dropped in the proverbial blink of an eye for the latest and greatest way to "easy" and "fast" weightloss. These fads may be a great way to lose about five or ten pounds quickly as an emergency measure, but they can never be a lifetime plan due their extremely restrictive nature, and lack of balance. These types of diets are only good for the short term, and in fact, may make you fatter once you're off of the plan since they often lead to "rebound over-eating" and yo yo dieting, both of which harm your metabolism by constantly leaving it in a state of confusion. If you are thinking of trying one of these fads, you may want to also try a quality, natural appetite suppressant since most of these diets will leave you in a constant state of hunger. We'll examine this year's fad diets. Believe it or not, some of these have actually been circulating for a while and are still a popular diet for quick weight loss - mostly via word of mouth. These diets have aquired somewhat of a mythology about them over time. A person you know probably knows someone or heard stories of someone who lost a drastic amount of weight on them. Popular Fad Diets, Summarized 1.) Cabbage Soup Diet What It Is: You make a cabbage soup concoction consisting of broth, lots of cabbage, onions, celery and a few other acceptable veggies. You consume nothing but this soup for days, or for as long as you can stand it, and get to gradually add in very small amounts of normal food. Why It's Hard: You may never want to eat soup or look at another carrot or onion again after this diet. Your hunger is never satisfied, because largely what you are consuming is water based, and that is why you can drop weight so quickly - you are not eating anything of real substance. Your stomach is in knots with gas pain and hunger. Bottom line is, this diet is very tough to stick to. When you first try the soup, you think "Hmm, not bad", but you will soon change your mind. The reward is very rapid weight loss. The problem is, as with all other fad diets, it comes back on just as rapidly if not quicker than it came off when the diet is over. Doctors actually prescribe this diet for patients who need to lose weight quickly for surgery. 2.) The Famous Atkins Diet What It Is: This is basically "The all you can eat - as long as it's pure protein diet". This diet gained a huge following almost immediately after Dr. Atkins released the Atkins Diet book to publication, and experienced another resurgence in about 2001 as a quick and easy way to melt the pounds off quickly without sacrificing too much. It attracted quite a bit of criticism due its extreme and unbalanced nature, as well as a concentration on high fat and cholesterol foods, with little fiber and sometimes little nutritional value. The foods it centers around are cheese, bacon, chicken, eggs, turkey, beef and snacks like pork rinds. Although the Atkins diet is extreme in nature, it paved the way for more balanced, heart and health friendly diets such as The Zone Diet and the South Beach Diet (two of my favorites), which preach more of a moderation mentality, balance, and a focus on more healthy, whole and unprocessed foods and a somewhat restricted calorie plan that doesn't leave you hungry. Why It's Hard: Your body goes into a state of ketosis due to a lack of carbs and sugars. You get bad breath. You may feel malnourished and weak - a sign of ketosis. The lack of fiber often leads to constipation. When you get hungry, you get HUNGRY! You may never want to look at another egg again in your life, and feel nauseous at the sight of meat. 3.) The All You Can Eat for Seven Days Diet What It Is: You get to choose from one food group each of the seven days. One day may be all chicken, one may be all fruit, and one may be all vegetables, with minimal restrictions on which ones are not allowed. You can eat as much as you want as long as it is within that one food group for each assigned day. Why It's Hard: Try eating one food group all day. It's very hard. This diet is almost guaranteed to cause a grumbling belly, since no one food can usually satiate anyone's appetite or sustain a feeling of fullness for any length of time. Variety is the spice of life, and this applies two-fold to diet boredom and how it leads ot overeating and binges. Once you go off of this diet, you will almost surely gain the weight back, and fast. The problem with diets like this is that they trigger an overeating response due to severe deprivation. 4.) The Snickers Diet What It Is: You get to eat only Snickers candy bars and may drink coffee or water only with this fad diet. I'm actually not sure how many Snickers bars are allowed per day, but do know someone that has a friend who lost over thirty pounds following this diet, but sacrificed her health, her skin and mental well being in the process. Why It's Hard: The first and most obvious reason this diet is unhealthy is that it is based on a calorie dense, high sugar content food, which leads to: high blood sugar, hunger, terrible skin problems, terrible breath, constipation, immune breakdown, unhealthy heart, loss of mental focus and clarity. There are, of course, many other fad diets that have come and gone, but these are some of the more extreme and interesting ones. While fad diets are tempting to try as a quick fix for drastic and fast weight loss, they should be regarded with caution. Most fad diets lead to larger subsequent weight gains because they are based on deprivation. So, as long as you know what you're getting going into it, and don't expect to use it as a long term solution to losing weight or maintaining weight loss, then you'll be prepared for the outcome. Depressed? Wise Woman Ways Offer a Helping Hand

By Susun Weed Winter time is depression time for many women. Perhaps it is harder to look at the bright side when days are short, perhaps the holidays and family demands take their toll on us. Of course, depression can also be triggered by lack of thyroid hormone and by use of steroids, high blood pressure drugs, and ERT/HRT. But most often the cause of depression is the belief (valid or not) that nothing you do makes any difference. Victimization and poverty lock women into depression. More than one-third of all American women have been victims of sexual or physical abuse; and women make up more than two-thirds of all Americans who live below poverty level. Gentle Avena nourishes the nerves and helps you remember why life is worth living. To make an infusion: Brew one ounce by weight of dried herb (that's a cup by volume) in a quart jar filled to the top with boiling water. Steep for at least four hours, then strain and refrigerate your infusion. Drink as many cups a day as you wish. Or make an oatstraw bath by adding two quarts of infusion to your bath water. Garden sage (Salvia) is an ancient ally for emotionally-distressed women. In some societies, only crones were allowed to drink the brew made from the nubbly leaves (at least partly because it delays menses and dries up breast milk). Make an infusion (see oatstraw); drink by mixing a few spoonfuls of the dense brew into hot water or warm milk; add honey to taste. The undiluted infusion keeps for weeks refrigerated. Behavioral and interpersonal therapies are as effective as drugs in relieving depression. Not only that, two-thirds of those who simply read about therapy improve significantly. Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise, especially soon after awakening, has been shown to help women whose depression is resistant to all treatments, including drugs. Sleep less. If you are a woman who overproduces a normal depression-causing substance which accompanies sleep you will feel depressed and often find it difficult to wake up. Sleeping more will only compound the problem. Instead, stay up all night once a week. If you cant cope with no sleep, even mild sleep deprivation (such as sleeping five hours or less for two nights in a row) dramatically decreases depressive symptoms in some people. Low levels of calcium, zinc, and B vitamins are associated with depression. Get more by eating more cheese and yogurt, more garlic and mushrooms, more whole grains and beans. Lack of vitamin B12 doubles the risk of severe depression for older women. This critical nutrient, found only in animal products, is destroyed by tofu and soy beverage. Drink real milk, eat real cheese, eat meat at least occasionally and watch your mood improve :) 1600 mg of SAM-e (A-adenosylmethionine) relieved the symptoms of moderate depression as well as imipramine, but no better than Hypericum (St. J's wort). CAUTION: Of the brands tested by Consumer Reports, only Natrol, Nature Made, TwinLab, and GNC passed all tests. Avoid hormone replacement - ERT/HRT - if you're depressed; it's strongly associated with an increase in suicide attempts. Women who used to take lithium say they have gradually switched over to skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora). A dose of infusion is one cup/250 ml or more per day; of fresh plant tincture is 5-8 drops twice a day; of the dried plant tincture is a dropperful/1 ml several times a day. CAUTION: Skullcap can make you sleepy. For women whose depression resists all other therapies, electro-convulsive treatments (ECT), previously known as shock treatments, have been updated with special care taken to minimize harm. The women I spoke with who were using ECT told me it was incredibly effective, and the side-effects, including severe memory loss, acceptable to them. From doing nothing, to ECT, the range of remedies available to depressed women is enormous. If the date is set, the number of guests must be considered next since other factors regarding the celebration will greatly depend upon the number of guests that the couple will be having. If you dont want too much of a crowd on your wedding, then invite only those who are closest to you, that is, your family and close friends. Make a list of all the people you know before writing invitation letters to make sure that no one is missed out. When this is done, start planning for your reception. The reception is the celebration of the marriage. Its a time of bonding and strengthening of relationships between families. Its a time for sharing. Christmas Ornaments and A Successful Marriage

The stress, the tension, the busy life-style or financial worries often cause a marriage to hang by a thread at Christmas; you may be thinking about divorce. As you decorate this season, it is a good time to evaluate the success of your wedding vows. As you hang the fish ornament for the fisherman of the family, think of the blessings that you have shared with your spouse-the love, children, trips, and gifts. Maslow said that to have success, people should have love, food, a dwelling and security. After that all thinks fall into place. Hang a house ornament to remind your family of the foundation of a home. Many ornaments have hearts on them. A heart reminds a couple that true love creates a lasting relationship that goes into eternity. Why did you marry in the first place? Was it for love? Love covers a multitude of mistakes; one Writer in the Bible says. Do you have an ornament with a rose on it? Let that remind you of the honor and affection that you have for one another. Think about the smiles, the laughs, the hugs, the kisses and the intimacy youve shared during your life together. Most trees have angel ornaments. The Bible says that angels guard and protect us. Sometimes angels come in human forms. They come in the form of pastors, friends or relatives who can be role models and give you guidance in making decisions about your marriage and even pray for you, if you desire. Some people collect teapot ornaments, which represents hospitality and openness of heart. Recall the good times that youve had at social events or doing something that may have meant sacrifice on the part of the partner. Occasionally you have an ornament or decoration that has a rabbit. Rabbits represent hope in the future. Make a list of the things that would make your marriage successful in your eyes. Take time to talk with your spouse. Mentally fill that basket with peace of mind, love for one another, joy of sharing a life together.
