They're Wide, They're Here, Get Used to It

By Lynnel Hampton Americas Obesity Epidemic As the numbers of overweight Americans continue to skyrocket, one thing is clear: being obese is the true exception to the rule in a society governed by a culture of gluttony. You cant turn on the television or turn the pages of a magazine without being bombarded by tantalizing images of cheap, marginally nutritious foods. Especially during the holidays, when visions of turkey with all the trimmings, cakes thick with icing, and gravy sodden mashed potatoes, may dance in our heads. Is it any surprise that more than 50% of us find this pressure to indulge almost impossible to resist? Its no big secret why 90% off all dieters fail. Society makes it impossible for them to succeed. Ritualistic Eats The overwhelming pressure to eat doesnt end with the appeals of Madison Avenue. The act of eating is interwoven with our social and work lives. Think about all those meetings when plates of cookies were available just because, or how going to the movies becomes an excuse to scarf down huge buckets of buttered popcorn and mega-sized bags of candy. Lets face it, for most Americans eating, like shopping, has become a recreational activity that has little to do with our basic biological needs. This is one reason why diets dont work. Only a fortunate 20% of Americans can easily eat for recreation. Blessed with a speedy metabolism or a personal trainer, their bodies will never betray them by turning that extra croissant into a love handle. Button Pushers While were placing blame, lets not forget the role that technology has played in thickening our middles. These days we dont have to work at anything but the office. Weve become a remote control, vacuum cleaner, washing machine society. In short, a nation of sedentary button pushers. Yes, there are gyms and aerobics classes, but who has the time? In the face of long work hours and lengthy commutes were too tired. It takes almost superhuman effort to stay in shape. The result: a population thats getting bigger by the minute. Whats the Solution? Despite a diet industry that nets over 33 billion dollars a year, a smorgasbord of fat free and low fat foods, and so called miracle diet pills, no cure has been found for obesity. Even if a cure materialized tomorrow, it wouldnt remove the near insurmountable obstacles to healthier eating habits. For that to happen a societal sea change must occur modifying the way we as a nation eat, move and work. Once bicycles and walking have become our preferred modes of transportation, once restaurants replace frying with baking and super size portions with realistic portions, and once eating becomes something we do in response to our true biological hunger, then, and only then will obesity cease to be an issue. In the meantime, many of our futures continue to loom large. If you are among that lucky 20%, and if you've ever made fun of an overweight person (be honest), know that by the grace of God, your quick metabolism or gym membership, that obese person could've been you. Tween Scene - No More Kids Clothes?

By Albert Medinas Shopping for kids clothes is, if not fun, at least a relatively painless parental task. All a parent needs to know to buy clothes is the childs age and favorite over-commercialized cartoon character. He then need only buy something with that age printed on the tag 2T for a two-year old, 6X for a tall six-year old bearing the appropriate Elmo or Dora the Explorer images. Not a flawless system, but one that has stood the transition from shopping moms to shopping, clueless dads like me. However, this system starts to unravel as your child approaches the tween years generally recognized as the ages between nine and twelve. The tween years are similar to the toddler years in that your child feels the need to assert independence, test limits, and even push a few buttons. But there is the added confusion of raging hormones causing body changes, mood swings, and occasional fits of pique. At this age, clothing not only fits differently due to growth (and those darn hormones), but your young person begins to have a sense of his own style, or at least a sense of what his peers are wearing. No more Rugrats, Blues Clues, or Barbie clothing themes. No more kids clothes. What will my kids want to wear? Tweens begin feeling the need to express their independence from their parents by emulating their peers. Its the prelude to full-blown teenager-hood, and as such, fashion plays a role. However, fashion and popular culture should never override parental wisdom, or common sense. Do we really need to see an eleven-year-old boys boxers billowing out of his low-slung pants like the braking chute on a drag racer? Should we really know what color underwear a ten year old girl is wearing as it climbs over the top of her jeans? Tweens will look to teens, and teen pop icons, for whats cool to wear, and in so doing will see a proliferation of skin and undergarments. Leaving aside the issue of whether this attire is appropriate for anyone, these are definitely not kids clothes. Yet they may very possibly be the clothes your kids will want to wear. No kids clothes? What should I buy? Fear not, all is not lost! The aware parent can be fashion-forward and still lose the babyish kids clothes. Todays tween/teen fashion seems to be centered on baggy and low slung, with an eye to 80s Prep. Plain white tee shirts are popular for both boys and girls, as are polo shirts (yes, the collars are back up!). Loose fitting cargo pants, jeans, khakis and chinos are also worn by both girls and boys. Many of todays jeans are low-rise, which means parents need to keep an eye out for peeping underwear and plumbers cleavage, but the right fit can be found. As silk scarf belts are in for girls, obtaining this accessory for your daughter might help keep the jeans up at their proper height. Popular with boys is the silk (or silk-like) shirt over that white tee. Untucked, this also can help disguise pants that seem to be hanging at knee level. One way young ladies can be skin-fashionable without being inappropriate is by wearing Capri pants coupled with the ped-like no-see socks that dont rise above the tops of the sneaker. Showing a little ankle may have been risqu in Queen Victorias day, but in todays Britney Spears boobs-and-bellies world, the ankle is an easy compromise. These socks are also worn by boys, so stock up. Whats this going to cost me? Lets face it - fashion can be expensive. And if my tween is going to be growing out of her clothes in three months, outfitting her could become prohibitively expensive. Fortunately, part of the problem is solved by the fashion itself. White tees, ankle-height socks, and even polo shirts are relatively inexpensive, and can be purchased at Target or Wal-Mart. However, some of the retailers that are offering these trendy kids clothes are on the higher end of the pricing scale. Abercrombie, American Eagle, Old Navy, and Gap are on the frontlines of kids clothes fashion, and are more expensive. Its best for the budget-conscious parent to pick a few pieces of anchor clothing from these places that can be accessorized or added to from discount stores. Remember: You are the parent As your child grows out of her kids clothes and into tween clothes, remember who is in charge. A tween is yet a child, and needs parental guidance and supervision. You decide what is or is not appropriate attire. And, unless your tween has a high-end, low-carb, no-sugar lemonade bar, you are probably the one paying for the clothes. You can allow your young person to grow and express herself within your parameters, and make the transition out of kids clothes a smooth one. Preparing for Rhinoplasty Surgery

By Kevin Stith Youve done your research, had several consultations, selected your surgeon and scheduled the surgery. Now what? Following some prudent rhinoplasty before and after suggestions can shorten your recovery, help to protect and preserve your health and improve your outcome. Heres a typical scenario of things to keep in mind before your rhinoplasty surgery. The night before the procedure, do not eat or drink anything after midnight. If your doctor has more stringent protective measures, by all means follow them hes only looking out for your health and safety. Some patients take this as a license to eat as much as they possibly can until the cutoff time. This is not a good practice as most of what you eat will still be in your digestive system at the time of the surgery. So eat lightly, rest well and go into the surgery at your best. Arrive early. The doctor will use these photos to plan the sequence of events in the surgery and to guide his artistry in creating your new look to the best of his ability. Five Ways to Stay Motivated During Your Diet

It is possible to lose weight in a consistent way and keep the pounds off. Perhaps in addition to a solid diet plan, there are some other aspects you have overlooked. Dieting is no different and with a few changes around your excitement for the task, you can get to your target weight. 1. Make it fun Tired of the same foods on your regimen? Do the meals seem boring and repetitive? Try a new recipe that makes sense with your plan. Spices and herbs dont interfere with most diet plans and can add a lot of flavor to the same ingredients. Don't Give Up on Your Diet

By Nathalie Lussier It has happened to all of us at some point or another: we were doing so well with our weight loss diet or exercise regime. Then suddenly we fell off the horse and decided that if we had already gone this far we might as well give up entirely. There's an old Chinese tale about a father and his son who lived on a farm. Together they raised sheep and cared for them. They lived off of these sheep and were able to make money from the sheep's fur. Every day both the father and the son walked around the field where they were raising the sheep to check that the fence was in good order. One night, the fence broke and some wolves sneaked into the field and ate some of the sheep. The son cried out to his father saying that all was lost and that they were now ruined! But the father simply picked up his tools and took his son to the fence to patch it up. Once the fence had been fixed, the father told his son that just because there was a weakness in the fence it does not mean that it cannot be fixed nor that it is impossible for them to keep raising sheep. Your diet or exercise regime is like sheep, it is always at risk of violated or destroyed. The fence represents your will power and your circumstances. It might happen that you're too busy to go to the gym or go jogging every morning for a period of time. It might happen that you were forced to stop at a fast food joint on the side of the high way. It might happen that you cave in to eating some chips, some chocolate, or any one of your other cravings. But that doesn't mean you should give up and let your sheep continue to be eaten by wolves. After you've stuffed yourself with what you know to be unhealthy food: stop and think about it. It's not the end of the world. If you go end up on a binge of food, you don't need to eat more bad food to "get it out of your system", to feel better or to make sure it never happens again. You will be faced with times where you want to eat something unhealthy, or you want to sleep in and skip your step class. No problem, but don't let that one incident ruin your motivation or your commitment to your diet or exercise regime. It happens to everyone, but if you're one of the people who is able to pick yourself up and fix the fence you'll be able to keep losing weight and get healthier.
